10/6/13 English Lesson

In today’s English lesson we first went through a feature article called, “Stop Killing Our Dolphins.” This just jogged my memory about persuasive language and how the author/writer constructs the article to persuade the reader to feel a certain way or get on side with the issue. They do this with the use of:

  • Inclusive Language (including the audience into what they are saying. eg. we, our)
  • Emotive Language (trying to make the reader feel a particular way)
  • Hyperbole (exaggeration)
  • Statistics, facts and experts (which make it more believable and must be true)
  • Imagery
  • Alliteration
  • Adjectives
  • Verbs
  • Who it appeals to

After we did that we went back over one of the questions in our recent exam. The question was:

“Discuss how either Text 1 or Text 2 has been constructed to encourage a particular response.”

We picked out all of the persuasive language in this also and there was also another one used, which was the rhetorical question. This is a question that doesn’t need an answer.

The particular response to this text would be that he is positioning the reader to feel guilty and that we should support him and get on side with this issue.

This lesson reminded me about persuasive language and was very useful.
